| Commonwealth Adoptions International, Inc. is still in the process of obtaining our Hague Accreditation. India is a Hague Convention country and therefore the rules of the Hague convention applies in this case. Until we are approved, we are not able to sign families up for this program. Please keep checking back with us as we are diligently working on getting our approval. If you want to learn more about the Hague Convention, please visit this website: http://www.travel.state.gov/family/adoption/convention/convention_462.html. |
We are currently only accepting new applications for the India program for those families where one spouse has an Indian passport or has an Overseas Citizen of India card. Families that do not hold an Indian passport or Overseas Citizen of India card but meet all other parent requirements may be matched with special needs children and older children.
adoption
In India, the international adoption process is managed by CARA, the Central Adoption Resource Authority. Commonwealth is enlisted by CARA to work with approved orphanages in India. Commonwealth works with several RIPA’s (Recognized Indian Placement Agencies), and primarily works in the state of Maharashtra. After completion of your dossier and a child has been identified as a match for your family, you will receive a photograph and limited medical information. After you commit to the child, you will complete the child-related documents and they will be sent to the RIPA (Recognized Indian Placement Agency). Your complete dossier will then be sent to the RIPA, and then on to CARA for approval and a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC). After the NOC is obtained, the RIPA files a petition in court to issue an order of guardianship. After guardianship is granted, the child's passport is prepared and you are invited to travel to India to bring your child home. You will go to the RIPA to obtain custody of the child, and then travel to New Delhi where you will obtain a visa for the child at the US Embassy. Commonwealth Adoptions International's in-country associates will meet you at the airport and walk you step-by-step through the entire adoption process in India. You will leave India as foster parents and your adoption will need to be finalized in accordance with the laws of the state in which you reside. Parents are responsible for those incurred fees.
